✅ Permitted Burning
- Allowed: Burning of branches, brush, leaves, garden waste, and weeds.
- Not Allowed: Burning of garbage, plastics, treated or painted wood, rubber, recyclables, and other hazardous materials without DNR approval.
🔥 Burning Requirements
Before burning:
- Notify the Washington County Sheriff's Department by using the online form Link to Washington County Sheriff's Office Controlled Burn Reporting
- Attend the fire at all times with tools to extinguish it (e.g., rake, hose).
- Do not use accelerants like gasoline.
- Avoid burning during unsafe conditions (e.g., high winds, dry weather).
- Maintain a 50-foot distance from buildings, roads, and property lines.
🚫 Prohibited Materials
Burning the following is strictly prohibited:
- Household garbage, food waste, and packaging
- Painted or treated wood
- Plastics and rubber
- Recyclable paper and cardboard
- Construction debris and furniture
🍔 Exemptions
- Grilling with charcoal, wood, propane, or gas is allowed except at multifamily residences (3+ units) unless in a Fire Chief-approved common area.
- Indoor heating devices are exempt unless burning prohibited materials.
- Use of fuels for construction or maintenance is also exempt.
